Sweetbay is the teaming of a Washington DC restaurateur and a group of St. Mary’s County friends who wanted to provide a catalyst to Leonardtown’s ongoing revitalization efforts through the development of a great neighborhood restaurant.

Peter Lupo brings 20 years of successful experience in the Washington, DC restaurant business. He owns and operates Scarlet Oak Restaurant & Bar in the Nationals Park neighborhood and Magnolia Kitchen & Bar on Dupont Circle.

The investors are a collection of business people, entrepreneurs, technologists, and foodies. They are connected by their love of good food, good wine and good friends. They all have a connection to Leonardtown and longed for a restaurant that is a cornerstone of neighborhood activities and a gathering place for friends and family.

ABOUT THE RESTAURANT NAME

The name “Sweetbay” is the clever connection between one of the restaurateur’s DC restaurants (Magnolia Kitchen & Bar) and our local flora. “Sweetbay” is the species of Magnolia most often found in Southern Maryland. Our restaurant name is a double entendre with reference to the DC restaurant and our much loved nearby Breton Bay.

RESTAURANT CONCEPT

Sweetbay Restaurant & Bar is a neighborhood restaurant designed to complement and enhance the lifestyle of the patrons from Southern Maryland. Our food is “American Fare with a Southern Flair” – Southern Maryland that is. We take advantage of the bounty of the Bay with crab, oysters and rockfish in season. Sweetbay combines fine casual dining with a neighborhood focus. We offer full entrees as well as shareable small plates making the dining experience one to be remembered. We offer a wine selection that will satisfy even the most discriminating connoisseur while never being pretentious. Our beer selection is creative and interesting. We pride ourselves in our specialty cocktails which are sure to delight. We treat our patrons as neighbors and friends delivering uncompromising quality and service with every visit.
